The Government of Bolivia announced the construction of a Renewable Diesel Plant in Santa Cruz with the investment of USD 250 million. The goal of this clean fuel production project is to achieve energy sovereignty and boost the country's economy.

President Luis Arce Catacora, the Minister of Hydrocarbons and Energy, Franklin Molina, and the head of the Bolivian Fiscal Oil Fields (YPFB), Wilson Zelaya, participated in the act of "Launching the Renewable Diesel Project" in Santa Cruz.

"We are taking a giant step in energy sovereignty in the country," said the President. "This is the first plant of a large renewable diesel production project."

Renewable diesel is used worldwide as a clean fuel directly in diesel vehicles without the need for engine modifications. In addition, it will contribute to the care of the environment.

The plant will be located at the Guillermo Elder Bell Refinery in Santa Cruz and will produce about 9,000 barrels of renewable diesel per day from the reuse of discarded oils, vegetable and animal fats.

“With the construction of the Renewable Diesel Plant, we estimate to process 450,000 tons of raw material per year, producing around 3 million barrels per year. This project will contribute to the change in the energy matrix and will save a significant amount of money on diesel imports," Minister Molina explained.

The commissioning of the plant will boost the national economy with the collection of used cooking oil, which will generate job opportunities for entrepreneurs and new small and micro businesses.

In turn, the YPFB executive affirmed that the construction project of the Renewable Diesel Plant will become a reality with the participation of “Bolivian talent” and international allied companies.

YPFB generated contacts with companies in France, the United States and Denmark, among other countries, to obtain information on the latest scientific advances made in the specific area of the renewable diesel project.
