A Costa Rican in charge of one of NASA’s Science Divisions

For the first time in its 60 year history, the United States Space Administration (NASA) has three women atop three of its four science divisions: Earth Science, Heliophysics and Planetary Science.

One of them is Costa Rica’s native Sandra Cauffman, acting director of the Earth Science division, which plans, organizes, evaluates, and implements a broad program of research on our planet's natural systems and processes. Cauffman’s journey and career in NASA was highlighted by the agency through a personal and emotional profile. “Even when we didn’t have anything, even when we got kicked out of places, even when we ended up living in an office because we had no place to go, my mother was always positive”, Cauffman remembered.

Fascinated by physics since a young age, Cauffman studied physics and electrical engineering at George Mason University and earned a master’s in electrical engineering. She joined NASA in February 1991 as the Ground Systems Manager for the Satellite Servicing Project at Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.

In 2017, Cauffman was honored by the official postal service of Costa Rica, Correos de Costa Rica, selected as one of three women to appear in a special set of stamps released in commemoration of International Women’s Day. Cauffman was featured with Cristiana Figuerez, a diplomat who served as Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, and Shirley Cruz, a soccer player who plays for the Costa Rica women's national soccer team.
