Costa Rica anticipates earlier 5G technology adoption?

Costa Rica may expect to adopt 5G technology before 2025, date in which it is estimated that only 11% of Latin American countries will have working the fifth generation of wireless technology for digital cellular networks.

The Corporate Telecommunications Directorate of the Costa Rican Electricity Institute (ICE) drew up the implementation of the 5G network nationwide in 2017 within a period of 2 years, so that Costa Rica could be at the forefront in this connectivity. Since then Costa Rica has focused on consolidating a digital transformation strategy that enables in the future a greater equity of opportunities and benefits for citizens and businesses.

5G began worldwide deployment in 2019 with forecasts focused for the technology to be used in 2020, although experts expect its global adoption around 2025. During Innovation Day Latin America 2019, organized at the end of the year in Mexico by the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB), representatives from Chinese multinational technology company Huawei were optimistic regarding Costa Rica’s position at the forefront of the 5G process. They specifically mentioned the country’s need to allocate new radio spectrums and to develop services and applications and services that will be provided through the new technology.

Among the specifications of the 5G technology, the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), reporting to the United Nations (UN), revealed the need for minimum download speeds of 20 Gigabits per second (Gbps) and 10 Gbps. rise, as well as a latency of 4 milliseconds (ms). This would lead to mobile devices being optimized to make the internet of things as efficient as possible, which is the interconnection with everyday objects.
