Costa Rica digital animation is valued in international markets

According to a recent study carried out by the Foreign Trade Promoter (PROCOMER) of Costa Rica, the country’s digital animation industry sector shows a strong orientation towards its internationalization, since 42% of its companies make sales abroad and 40% of their total income comes from such exports.

The study, called “Profile of digital animation in Costa Rica”, highlights United States, Canada, Mexico and the United Kingdom as the main markets for Costa Rican digital animation productions, which works with distributors of world-class content such as Disney, Cartoon Network, Discovery and Dreamworks TV.

Digital animation in Costa Rica is formed by more than 62 studios and specialized companies that produce for the advertising and film industry -mainly series and short films- generating 0.4% of the country's gross domestic product (GDP), with a annual average growth of 13.3% during the last five years. The global digital animation market had in 2018 a value of USD 270 billion and an average growth of 4% is projected until 2022, with boosters such as streaming, the demand for visual effects in the film industry and greater access to content by children.

“Although it is still a small industry in our country, it generates more than 500 direct jobs. This shows us that it is a dynamic sector with the possibility of growing if we continue supporting you in the challenges and strengths that lie ahead," said Marta Esquivel, Director of Commercial Intelligence at PROCOMER. Among the challenges mentioned by Esquivel are the need of more public funds and international co-production agreements.
