Costa Rica proceeds towards a government space agency

Congresswoman Aida Montiel presented a draft Law for the creation of the Costa Rican Space Agency (AEC, for its Spanish acronym), which will allow a specialized national entity to execute all space policies related matters. “Costa Rica is ready to make a quantitative leap in space exploration, as we have already made satellite launches and we have Costa Rican experts who can grow this activity exponentially”, said Montiel, who highlighted as the main goals to promote space research, innovation and development.

Costa Rica is already member of the International Astronautical Federation (IAF) and the Central American Aeronautics and Space Administration (ACAE), a Costa Rican born non-profit organization belonging to the field of science, technology and innovation, which aims to position the region on the aerospace sector and lead its active participation in space global endeavors.

The country is also widely recognized for being home of Dr. Franklin Chang Díaz, a Costa Rican Chinese American mechanical engineer and physicist who in 1980 was selected to become a part of NASA’s astronauts corps. Since leaving NASA Chang Díaz has created US base company Ad Astra Rocket, which in 2015 received around USD 10 million from NASA to fully develop a new version of the Variable Specific Impulse Magnetoplasma Rocket (VASIMR) engine, a plasma-based propulsion system.
