Costa Rican inventors find platform in the Appropriate Technology Competitions

The Appropriate Technology Competitions, jointly held by the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), was organized for the first time in Costa Rica.

Semanario Universidad informed that Wilberth Mora, Rita Rojas and Andrés Picado, students of Medical Device Engineering at the Costa Rica Institute of Technology, were the winners of the contest by creating a mechanically stabilized spoon for patients with Parkinson's disease.

Second place went to Fabian Araya and Daniela Arias, who developed a wireless device to avoid the Forgotten Baby Syndrome, while third place went to Allison Aymerich, astudent at the Universidad Fidélitas, who created a mobile application that prevents possible flooding in river sewerage systems.

The Appropriate Technology Competitions began in April with the theme “Innovative Solutions for Improving Quality of Life.” Appropriate technology (AT) refers to technology that is developed to suit the environmental, cultural, social and economic conditions of a region. In particular, pulling from Korea’s source of extensive patent information, it is possible to develop AT suitable for a developing country at a low cost. AT Competitions are held by identifying problems in developing countries and inviting the local community to use patent information and submit technology as a solution.
