Country Brand and economy expected to grow thanks to FIFA World Cup

The 2018 FIFA World Cup is scheduled to take place in Russia from 14 June to 15 July 2018. And, besides of the emotion of watching soccer´s most exciting players and most historic national teams fighting for the sport´s most prestigious trophy, the FIFA World Cup is expected to impact more than just football.

Costa Rican economic analyst Luis Diego Hererra said that, prior and during June and July, Costa Rica will improve its economy thanks to an increase in domestic consumption that would directly benefit several commercial sectors. Herrera explained to CRHoy that the biggest economic consequences are expected for tourist packages, advertising, television screens, sports equipment and visits to restaurants and bars.

But the presence of Costa Rica in its fifth FIFA World Cup will also enhance the international recognition of the Country Brand "Esencial Costa Rica", basically increasing tourism levels. The Costa Rican national team is part of Group E and will face Serbia, Brazil and Switzerland in the cities of Samara, Saint Petersburg and Nizhni Nóvgorod, respectively. After a historical eight position in the previous FIFA World Cup (Brazil 2014), the eyes of the world are expected to be much more attentive and appreciative of Costa Rica.

In its analysis, Herrera emphasized that major sporting events such as the 2018 FIFA World Cup are able to reactivate in the short term the economies of its 32 participating countries. However, governments must establish long-term policies so that benefits can be sustained over time.
