The National Registry of Intellectual Property granted the University of Costa Rica a patent on a new engraving technique, developed at the Faculty of Fine Art of the University and recognized as a global innovation.

The invention was developed by local artist and researcher Salomón Chaves Badilla, who created a non-toxic engraving technique, simpler than the traditional ones, less dangerous to handle and eco-friendly. It was carried out as part of the Chaves PhD thesis at the Complutense University of Madrid, Spain.

"This patent encourages and demonstrates the quality, importance and relevance of research that fine art can generate to positively impact society”, said Marianela Cortés, director at the University of Costa Rica.
