Automated system for customs in El Salvador's International Airport

The General Directorate of Customs (DGA) of El Salvador will implement the Automated System for Customs Data (ASYCUDA or Sidunea World) at the Monseñor Óscar Arnulfo Romero International Airport, the fiscal area with the largest number of declarations of imported merchandise in the country: in 2018, 163,000 declarations of imported merchandise were processed at the airport customs office for a total value of over USD 175 million.

ASYCUDA is a computerized system designed by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) to administer a country's customs. Installed or being implemented in over 90 countries, territories and regions, the system is directed at reforming the customs clearance process. It aims at speeding up customs clearance through the introduction of computerization and simplification of procedures and thus minimizing administrative costs to the business community and the economies of countries. It also aims at increasing customs revenue, which is often the major contributor to national budgets in most countries, by ensuring that all goods are declared, that duty/tax calculations are correct and that duty/exemptions, preference regimes, etc. are correctly applied and managed.

Since November 2018 ASYCUDA is already in operation in El Salvador at the Port of Acajutla, located on the Pacific Coast and the country’s main seaport, with the aim of reducing the steps in the process of importing goods. At the Monseñor Óscar Arnulfo Romero International Airport, the DGA announced that the implementation of the system will be gradual and would start with UPS El Salvador, the local subsidiary of American multinational package delivery and supply chain management company.
