El Salvador prepares to join Guatemala-Honduras customs union

The ministers of Economy from El Salvador and Nicaragua announced on August 1 the decision of their countries to join the recently formalized customs union between Guatemala and Honduras, the first customs union in Central America.

"I have expressed the decision to join the customs union that Guatemala and Honduras haver already formed”, said the Minister of Economy of El Salvador, Tharsis Salomón López, at a press conference after the meeting with his Nicaraguan counterpart.

López explained that El Salvador hopes to end the negotiation rounds on December 2017, and that their linkage to the customs union will not be executed through a new integration agreement but rather sealing the needed points to join the already signed agreement between Guatemala and Honduras.

Last June, Guatemala and Honduras launched the first customs union in Central America, which liberalized 75% of their bilateral exchange and left open the possibility of incorporating other nations from the region.
