El Salvador triples exports of specialty coffee

In the last nine years El Salvador has tripled its exports of specialty coffee, an exclusive coffee variety grown in special and ideal climates, distinctive because of their full cup taste and in high demand in international markets. According to the Salvadoran Coffee Council, exports of speciality coffee began to grow in the 2009-2010 harvest, when El Salvador sold 8.8 million quintals, and since have increased yearly.

Prensa Latina informed that during the 2016-2017 harvest 27.1 million quintals of gold coffee were produced throughout the country in ideal microclimates were the producer collects the coffee at its most optimal point of maturity and dries it in the so-called African drying beds, which ensure they are exposed to continuous airflow and thus uniform drying, creating a more consistent coffee.

Hugo Hernández, executive director of the Salvadoran Coffee Council, said that the average price of specialty coffee has increased nearly a 25 percent in the last nine years: from USD 252.25 per quintal in 2009 to USD 333.80 per quintal in 2017.
