Modernizing customs operations

El Salvador’s General Directorate of Customs (DGA, for its Spanish acronym) launched an application that allows users to track in real time imports, exports and transit related procedures carried out through the Port of Acajutla, located on the Pacific Coast and the country’s main seaport.

The recently launched app, called Verify the Customs Status (VEA), is part of the modernization process of El Salvador Customs, which in the last years was looking to enhance its system through international assistance from organisms like the National IT Industry Promotion Agency (NIPA) of Korea.

Armando Flores, head of the DGA, highlighted the need of the new tool to modernize customs operations and help improve revenue collection. “VEA will make customs operations more transparent”, Flores said. The application shows step by step, in chronological order, the route followed by the merchandise once inside the port.

VEA works together with the Automated System for Customs Data (ASYCUDA World), an integrated customs management system for international trade and transport operations in a modern automated environment. It is designed by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and covers over 80 countries.
