New round of negotiations for the integration of El Salvador to the Customs Union

On April 9, 2019, negotiations continued towards the implementation of the Northern Triangle Customs Union formed by El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras. Guatemala City hosted the fourth round of negotiations, with the aim of addressing several technical issues to facilitate future trade: migration, security, air transport, sanitary and phytosanitary measures, tariffs, customs, taxes and central banks are the eight working tables currently in discussion.

“El Salvador's accession to the agreement is not a mere letter, nor is it a simple agreement between the parties. By signing the accession, the technical teams committed themselves to work on the homologation of many processes”, said Luz Estrella Rodríguez, Minister of Economy.

In Guatemala City it was officially agreed that the Port of Acajutla (southwest) and the Monseñor Óscar Arnulfo Romero International Airport (center) are now part of the peripheral circuit of the Customs Union.

Likewise, it was announced that as part of the evaluations to measure transit times between the three countries, the World Bank will carry out measurement exercises using Fyduca, the electronic document that records transfer (formerly known as exports) and acquisitions (formerly known as imports) of goods with free movement, that are traded between the sales taxpayers.
