Honduras celebrates the world’s creative industries

From February 25 to 27, 2019, Honduras held the International Congress of Creative Industries, gathering in the city of Tegucigalpa professionals, institutions and companies from Bolivia, Colombia, Peru, Equatorial Guinea, Mexico, Nicaragua, Spain and Morocco, among other countries.

People and inventions were recognized during the event as part of promoting the creative industries with a clear focus on the IP rights component of them.

The creative industries include a diverse group of activities, all of which rely to a greater or lesser degree on the contribution of original work and its protection through various IP rights. They link important elements of our shared artistic and cultural heritage with a future based around the digital transfer of ever-increasing amounts of information and content. Press, literature, music, theatre, operas, motion pictures, radio, TV, photography, software, databases, visual and graphic arts, advertising and video games are part of the creative industries, which according to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) are now “acknowledged as a driver of economic growth” and a key element for developing countries to help deliver United Nations fourth sustainable development goal: education.

A 2017 WIPO report stated that growth in the creative industries is on average three times that of the economy as a whole. “In three-quarters of countries surveyed using WIPO evaluation guidelines, the creative industries made a contribution to GDP of between 4 percent and 6.5 percent. Notably, countries which have recently experienced rapid economic growth typically have an above-average share of GDP attributed to the creative industries”, says the report.
