Panama-China FTA first round of negotiations will begun July 9

A year after the establishment of diplomatic relations between Panama and the People's Republic of China, progress continues to be been made in the negotiations for the signing of a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the two countries. “It is impressive everything that has been achieved in just one year of having established this relationship”, said Panama’s President Juan Carlos Varela.

Two weeks ago, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MICI) of Panama held a meeting with the Commission of International Trade Negotiations, made up of the country’s public and private sectors, to communicate the results of Panama’s latest official mission to China, where the first round of negotiations for a FTA with China was decided to be held in Panama from July 9 to 13.

"We will keep working in partnership with our public and private sectors, with a common country vision as an horizon in order to identify the greatest opportunities for our economy”, said Alberto Alemán Arias, head of the negotiations of the FTA with China.
In recent weeks, the MICI has carried out meetings with several organizations that cover the agricultural, industrial, agroindustrial and service national sectors, to address their expectations as well as their concerns and recommendations prior to July 9.

On March, the two sides agreed on the contents of a feasible study report, marking the completion of joint feasible study. The joint report pointed out that China and Panama are strongly complementary to each other in economy and the signing of FTA on the basis of the mutually beneficial cooperation will help upgrade bilateral trade and investment liberalization and facilitation, explore the potential for bilateral trade and economic cooperation and bring the real interest for the business and people of both sides.
