Paraguay officially registers the Champagne appellation of origin

By BKM | Berkemeyer - 25/03/2021

In a decision dated October 29, 2020, the National Directorate of Intellectual Property of Paraguay (Dinapi, for its Spanish acronym) officially registered the Champagne appellation of origin (AO). Hereafter, the Champagne appellation will be recognized and protected throughout the Paraguayan territory against any misuse or derived term of its name.

Paraguay joins a122 countries list, including the majority of Latin American countries, which already protect the name Champagne, one of the most notorious appellations in the world.

“This decision is particularly important because it is the culmination of a procedure that was initiated in 2012 and suspended between 2015 and 2019 due to the pending publication of a decree allowing the application of the Paraguayan law on geographical indications. With this final and definitive outcome, the Champagne Committee once again illustrates its ability to successfully pioneer the implementation of new legislations on geographical indications in the world,” stated Vincent Perrin, CEO of the Champagne Committee.

An appellation of origin is a special kind of geographical indication generally consisting of a geographical name or a traditional designation used on products which have a specific quality or characteristics that are essentially due to the geographical environment in which they are produced. Consumers are familiar with these products and often request them – even unknowingly – using their geographical name.

Paraguay has had specific legislation on the matter since 2013, regarding the submission of applications for preliminary recognition and subsequent registration of geographical indications and appellations of origin. Dinapi has promoted campaigns of this IP tool in different parts of the country where there may be a product that is susceptible for an appellation of origin.

Currently Ao po’i of Yataity has preliminary recognition for an appellation. Ao po’i is a Guarani word which means “fine cloth or delicate garment” and refers to a traditional clothing manufacture technique from a district located 164 kilometres away from capital Asunción.
