Commercial exchange of agricultural products with the United States

By Espinosa Bellido Abogados - 01/07/2020

The National Agricultural Sanitation Service (Senasa) of Peru and the United States Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) held on June 19, 2020, a meeting to facilitate the commercial exchange of agricultural products between the two countries.

The talk was centered on market access for new agricultural Peruvian products such as aguaymanto, pitahaya, and granadilla.

The APHIS has recently prepared a document to assess pest risks associated with importing commercially-produced fresh fruit of raspberry for consumption from Peru into the United States. Using scientific literature, port-of-entry pest interception data, and information from the government of Peru, the inspection service developed a list of pests with quarantine significance for the United States that occur in Peru (on any host) and are associated with the commodity plant species (anywhere in the world).

The U.S. market is an important trade partner for Peru, considering that, in 2019, the South American country exported 562,418.3 tons of products like grapes, avocados, blueberries, tangerines, bananas, coffee, and fresh asparagus, among others.

In addition, the export of Peruvian products to this market has given small and medium producers from various regions of the country a great alternative to market their products, generate greater profits, and improve their families' quality of life.
