Peruvians focus on trademark registration to reactivate the economy

By Espinosa Bellido Abogados - 01/09/2020

The latest trademark report from the National Institute for the Defense of Competition and Protection of Intellectual Property (Indecopi) of Peru, reveals that during July 2020 the number of trademark registration applications grew from 3,660 to 3,815 compared to the same month of 2019, an increase of 4.23%. Of the total number of trademark registration applications filed at Indecopi during July, 77.59% were from national applicants and 22.41% from foreigners.

“This figures show that registrations are carried out mainly by local businesses and entrepreneurs. Indecopi will continue to promote the registration of trademarks through online seminars, trainings and workshops in all regions of the country, and specially through its digital platforms accesible to all citizens,” the Indecopi stated in a press release.

In a scenario of economic reactivation during the Covid-19 pandemic, Indecopi has strengthen its online services and called for national companies, professionals, inventors, start ups and entrepreneurs to register their products and services, specifically focusing on the high value of an intellectual property asset during a context of exponential growth of virtual markets and greater risks of improper use of brands.

Free consulting for searches and registrations, and efforts to reduce the time of procedures are among the main topics worked by Indecopi, which covered this and other activities through its #YoProtejoMiMarca (I Protect My Brand) campaign launched in May.
