Access channel to the port of Montevideo will be deepened

A 14 meter deepening of the access channel to the port of Montevideo was approved on May 4 by the Administrative Commission for the Rio de la Plata (CARP), the binational organism formed by Uruguay and Argentina which regulates issues related to navigation, fishing, water pollution and maritime safety of the river.

Uruguay minister of Transport, Víctor Rossi, stressed at a press conference that the future reform will allow Montevideo to receive the world’s largest cargo ships that exist in the world.

The deepening is foreseen in the Master Plan 2018-2035 coordinated by the National Ports Administration of Uruguay with contributions from the private sector. Although still under design, the plan will establish the strategic lines of port activity for the coming years.
