Presided by Franklin Hoet-Linares, the World Jurist Association organized its XXVI Biennial Congress

The World Jurist Association (WJA), worldwide presided by Franklin Hoet-Linares, founding Partner at Hoet Peláez Castillo & Duque, organized its XXVI Biennial Congress from February 19 to 20 in Madrid, Spain, bringing together more than 2,000 people from the international legal world and prominent figures from Spanish civil society.

According to Hoet-Linares, the event was an opportunity to debate some of the most relevant issues of the international agenda, such as democracy and constitution, democracy and human rights, multilateralism as a demand of political and economic globalization, security and defense as guarantees for social and institutional stability, and ethics & corporate governance, among others. “We have selected Madrid because it has unique conditions for its communication facilities, language and attraction of international tourism”, Hoet-Linares said days before the congress, interviewed by Cambio16. “We will establish the foundations that will set the precedent for future law conferences in Spain”, he added.

With 55 years of history, the WJA is a Non-Governmental Organization with consultative status with the United Nations, present in 85 countries, which stands out as an open forum that has been holding relevant conferences and congresses where judges, lawyers, professors and legal professionals of more than 140 nationalities, work and cooperate to reinforce and expand the rule of law and its institutions.

During the congress, the WJA presented its World Peace & Liberty Award His Majesty King Felipe VI of Spain, recognizing through Felipe VI the democratic institutions of the Spanish State, his unwavering commitment to the rule of law and his prominent role at the international level as a leader in the defense of democracy and liberty.

Among the main speakers of the event were José Manuel Ramos-Horta, Former President of East Timor and Nobel Prize awarded 1996, Vanessa Neumann, President and CEO of Asymmetrica, and Luis Almagro, OAS Secretary General.
