Mexico accuses Chinese retailer for cultural appropriation

By Dumont - 08/08/2022

According to a letter sent from the Ministry of Culture to Shein, some design elements of the “Fan-Trim Top with Floral Print" were similar to a traditional huipil embroidery made in 2017 by an artisanal clothing brand from southeastern Mexico.

"These designs have been passed down from generation to generation, so they are the product of a collective creativity corresponding to the Mayan people," the Ministry said in the letter.

Shein is a Chinese online fast fashion retailer known for its affordably priced apparel. After the demand from Mexico, the company announced the removal of the product from its website.

In the last years Mexico has begun a strong international protection campaign of local copyrights and traditions in the fashion industry. Similar letters and actions have been taken against companies like Anthropologie, Carolina Herrera, Patowl and Zara.
