USMCA as a regional tool por intellectual property promotion

The United States ambassador to Mexico, Ken Salazar, reinforced the importance of intellectual property protection between the two countries as an essential tool to develop and promote ideas and creations that help the economies of the two countries and North America as a whole.

During a virtual participation in the framework of the World Intellectual Property Day organized by Mexico's Intellectual Property Office (IMPI), Mr. Salazar highlighted actions carried out in the United States intellectual property-intensive industries and its influence on GDP and jobs. He called for Mexico to continue adopting policies in such direction, specially regarding piracy issues. Mr. Salazar specifically praised the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement as a regional platform that helps IP dissemination, discussions and protection.

“By protecting intellectual property, our economies grow and become stronger, we generate trust and motivate innovation since it is guaranteed that creativity and originality are recognized, and that talent and work are paid for,” he said.

The Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement establishes a legal framework of minimum standards for the protection and enforcement of IP rights in North America. The IP chapter builds on existing international IP agreements such as the World Trade Organization (WTO) Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) and certain treaties administered by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). The chapter includes obligations on copyright and related rights, trademarks, geographical indications, industrial designs, patents, data protection for pharmaceutical and agricultural chemical products, trade secrets, and IP rights enforcement.
